Who decides who lives and dies? Dr. Viktor Gottlieb goes to work in a German hospital only to discover that he and his fellow doctors decide. As his internal conflicts grow, he comes to realize that all those silly religious sentiments he had discarded when he became a man merited more serious consideration. But will he change his mind? Will it matter? For anyone?

Life Unworthy of Life edition by Derek Elkins Religion Spirituality eBooks

Life Unworthy Of Life refers to the demented Nazi view of handicaps both mental and physical in German children. Meaning that they did not deserve to live, take resources away from the German forces or sully the purity of the Nazi ideal. The story was compelling but not as well written as it should have been. There were so many typographical errors that I complained to Amazon and hope that it was passed on to the publisher.

Wow. Life Unworthy of Life reminds us all of this fact We have never locked eyes with someone that doesn't matter to God. Elkins examines the sanctity of life...every life, even those some in society consider "the least of these."
In the midst of the Second World War, a fledgling doctor finds himself working on the T4 Project, a project designed to examine, and eventually execute, anyone who has a disablilty of anykind. Mental, physical...all abnormalities are up for dissection. The end dream of this project is clear the perfection of the human race, with Hitler as the Hero. Yet we find that this doctor, Viktor, begins to struggle with the thought of killing those he see's as "vermin, unworthy of life." Germany is in the middle of a war, and can't afford to support those that are "less than animals."
And then he meets a boy with a mind like none other. Dieter is extremely intelligent, understanding the intricacies of both physics and philosophy. But Dieter is also blind in both eyes, and since that's a genetic abnormality, must be examined, then extinguished. Yet the bond he forms with Viktor is not easily broken. As Viktor seeks counsel and advice from his brother August, he continues to wrestle with his beliefs, his values and his conscience. And when the project is scrapped and the patients ordered to be executed, Viktor has a quick decision to make. Save the life of an imperfect boy, or follow orders for the "betterment" of Germany? Somewhere along his journey, the Godly example and unconditional love from his brother August begin to shake Viktor's heart, leading him not only toward a change in lifestlye, but a change in heartstyle.
Life Unworthy of Life...there's no such thing.
First, I must say, that I love truth woven into fiction. And in this award winning page turner, author Derek Elkins delivers a weighty dose of that. On the surface, this wonderful, yet darkly wounding fiction novel, "Life Unworthy of Life," (set in the dark medical institutions of the Nazi Regime), proposes one overarching central theme Is every life precious?

Victor, one of the central characters of the book, is a promising young German doctor, who has been sent to work on Hitler's T4 experimentation program; namely to put people who are blind, mentally ill, or otherwise infirm, out of their misery. Victor's brother, (who is a clergyman, and also serves as Victor's conscience at times), happens to live in the same town where the experimentations and killings are being performed. It is in this backdrop that Victor is taken through stages regarding his ethics and his conscience, as he finds out and attempts to justify, little by little, what black, horrifying atrocities are being carried out in the name of science, and in the name of the regime.

He is not alone. Because of the subject matter, there are a number of deeper issues that he and his comrades struggle with, such as Is there a God? What happens when man becomes his own God? And what is the result merely thinking we are evolved from the lower animals? The philosophical questions here run deep, and can get you thinking. In addition, the struggle of one the characters alludes to the problem of conscience, and why someone who doesn't believe in God is still so bothered by their sins.

Also central to the book is a theme of humanity and redemption, as the doctor becomes ever fonder of a blind child named Dieter, whose character causes you to analyze such biblical messages as sometimes it is the blind that see; the greatest light can be seen in the darkness and; a child will lead them. The book whispers of these themes, as you read it.

Finally, juxtaposition the Nazi's and their anti-religious ways really being about power and control, causing death, whereas the ways of the tortured patients about love and life, you have got a real page turner with meaning.

When death begins, where does it end?

Aw well, you reap what you sow...
Great book, loved it. I loved the characters and the story.
